The best bits of Queanbeyan and surrounds.

Is the new kebab shop on Uriarra Road as good as people are saying it is?

Is the new kebab shop on Uriarra Road as good as people are saying it is?

Since the death of Pasha’s Kebab House on Queanbeyan’s main street in 2018, there’s been a serious lack of a good independent kebab in town. Until now.

People have been Facebook-raving about Old Town Kebabs and Cafe, located on Uriarra Road in the tiny building that used to house a Chinese takeaway, and opposite Cardawan Pet Foods and Supplies.

Staring down the barrel of an Old Town chicken kebab.

Old Town is under the management of Phoebe and Carlos Loo, owners of GooDeal Catering and masters of smoked meats. According to Phoebe, the Old Town menu’s been designed to offer Queanbeyan residents a good dinner option every night of the week.

“There is no special ingredient [in our kebabs], it’s just that we put a lot of effort into buying and preparing fresh ingredients and we take our time,” Phoebe says.

“You can taste the difference when someone cares about the food they’re serving.”

Pretty sure this is meant to say ‘Smoked Specials’ and not just meals reserved for smokers. I hope. Because I don’t smoke.

Beyond kebabs, the Old Town menu is like something from a small corner cafe in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Smoked specials include beef brisket, BBQ pork chop and fried chicken wings. The Classics include a big breaky wrap, the BLT and omelettes.

“We’d love everyone to come and try the menu and give us some feedback,” Phoebe says.

The kebab taste test

C! News’s resident tradie and cafe reviewer, Mark Element, took on a chicken kebab with BBQ sauce on Wednesday night.

Here’s his verdict:

Freshness: 10/10

Meat to salad ratio: More meat required

Meat: Unbelievably good. Smokey, tender, never tasted anything like it.

Sauces: Delicious.

Size: Not big enough!

Will you be back: 100%

Could this be Queanbeyan’s answer to the Yarralumla kebab? Definitely! If it was double the size.

Old Town Kebabs and Cafe is open on Uriarra Road, Queanbeyan, weeknights from 5pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 10pm. Phoebe hopes to open on Sunday nights ‘soon’.
