Bungendore is set to come to life this weekend during the annual Bungendore Harvest Festival.

The festival is a busy weekend of events and sees the usual weekly Bungendore Farmers Market become a Festival Market with extra stallholders, farmers and producers from around the region.

Described as “a celebration of the region’s local produce, cold climate food, drink and fibre”, this year’s festival features demonstrations and workshops, as well as lots of ready-to-eat food.

“So you can sample what our local producers are doing,” says organiser Ruth Gaha-Morris.

“It’s going to be a real festival atmosphere with music, dancing, games and even scarecrow making.”

Organisers are hoping to attract a large crowd from the surrounding regions to support the local producers.

“I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that it’s been a pretty tough few years for farmers so we’re really looking forward to coming together with the community,” Ruth says.

Market stalls on the day will include a variety of fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices, meat and poultry, fresh seafood from the coast, local preserves and jams, cheese, eggs, garlic, honey, wine and oil.

A highlight of the festival is a long lunch on Sunday, celebrating Lebanese culture and heritage. Three generations of women will prepare a Lebanese family feast from produce grown within a 150km radius of Bungendore.

The festival is run by Southern Harvest Association, a not-for-profit organisation working with farmers and consumers in the region to create resilient, sustainable, local food communities. The Southern Harvest Association also facilitates the Saturday Bungendore Farmers Market and runs a weekly produce box scheme in the Canberra area.
