A wake is being held at Walsh’s for Terry (aka Tex the Cowboy) – and everyone’s invited
A wake for well-known Queanbeyan identity Terry O’Callaghan (aka Tex the Cowboy) is being held at Walsh’s Hotel later this month – and everyone’s invited.
Terry died at home in late May and an outpouring of generosity from the Queanbeyan community paid for his cremation in early June. Terry’s ashes were spread at the family farm – where Terry grew up – in North Canterbury, Culverden, New Zealand.
Now, the O’Callaghan family is hosting a wake in the city he so loved. The event will be held on Saturday 23 July 2022 at 2pm at Walsh’s.

According to Terry’s niece, Carley Weston, Terry was a regular at Walsh’s and the family thought it would be a great place to celebrate their much-loved brother and uncle.
While Carley herself can’t make it to the wake, her mum – and Terry’s sister – Sharon will be there, as well as Terry’s brother Barry and niece Khrissa. Terry’s family would love to meet as many Queanbeyan residents as possible.
“We were overwhelmed by the support and love we received from Queanbeyan when uncle Terry passed away,” Carley says.
“We had no idea he was so well-known and so loved by the people there. It’s been just amazing.”

Carley said light snacks will be provided at the wake and while the dress code is casual, wearing an akubra or cowboy boots in honour of Terry is highly encouraged.
Terry was a famous Queanbeyan identity pretty much as soon as he moved the city from the north coast of NSW in the mid-1990s. He loved a chat, especially about music, his beloved All Blacks and nuclear fusion.
The day he died, love for Terry began pouring in on the Queanbeyan Community Noticeboard.
