6 Queanbeyan (and region) businesses we’re absolutely loving right now
Say hello to our pick for this month.
1. MAMA Beauty
Where to find them
In person: 7/189 Gorman Drive, Googong NSW
Website: http://mama-beauty-pty-ltd.square.site
Facebook: /mama.beautyptyltd
Instagram: @mama.beauty.ptyltd
Why we love them
Easy to find on the corner of Gorman Drive and Caragh Ave, their huge pink neon sign brings a small touch of Vegas to Googong. A mother of four boys, Simone Carrick is the owner of MAMA Beauty, offering everything from lip tattooing and skin needling to LED therapy and lashes.
The salon is so stylish and serene it’s sure to leave you looking and feeling refreshed. They also offer take-home beauty and skin treatments and baby pink MAMA beauty tracksuits that are giving us total Paris Hilton vibes!
2. Dirty Chops Barber
Where to find them
In person: Shop 5, 8 Beltana Road, Pialligo ACT
Website: www.dirtychops.com.au/
Facebook: /dirtychopsbarber
Instagram: @dirtychopsbarber
Why we love them
Owned by Jerrabomberra resident Dave Edwards (who’s not even close to being as popular as his apprentice, Jye Merchie), Dirty Chops Barber has recently moved to a new home in Pialligo, and isn’t she a beauty. The fit-out combines retro barbershop with quirky complements: think checkerboard flooring and vintage bus seats – with seatbelts! Their services include expert beard and moustache grooming and their sweet tagline “Life is too short for shit cuts!” goes pretty good too.
A recent instagram ad seeking a new barber for the shop said: “Must have ace, but shit, but ace, banter skills” (where do we apply?!) Not only do they give cool cuts but the boys sell awesome merch too – check out their T-shirts “Jerk to Inflate” and Bay Rum cologne, both sure to be a hit with the Queanbeyan ladies.
3. Amber’s Dot Painting
Where to find them
Facebook: /Ambers-Dot-Painting
Why we love them
Aged 13, Amber Russell is a local Aboriginal girl from the Ngunnuwal/Yuin tribe. She spent time over the summer holidays perfecting her dot painting; learning techniques from family members.
Amber sells beautiful homewares including chopping boards, coasters, clocks and more. We think Amber is showing amazing initiative for a young woman who just started high school! We can’t wait to see what she creates in the future.
4. Colour Me Rust and Rose
Where to find them
In person: 6 Silva Ave, Queanbeyan NSW
Website: http://colourmerustandrose.com.au
Facebook: /colourmerustandrose
Instagram: @colourmerustrose
Why we love them
Owned by local artist Cathy Anderson, this surprise store is tucked away in the industrial area of Queanbeyan and will inspire you to DIY paint every piece of furniture in your house! Their speciality is chalk paint, which if you haven’t heard is HUGE in the US right now.
The paint and colour section is to die for and will have you questioning whether your TV cabinet would look better in “Prickly Pear” or “Fiery Sky” (or both). They also stock brushes, mineral and silk paints, transfers and clear waxes and top coats to make your pieces last forever. If you’re hesitant, you can book in to one of Cathy’s workshops and learn from the expert before tackling that huge tall boy someone had placed out the front and you just had to have. WARNING: extremely addictive!
5. Love and Frosting Cupcakes
Where to find them
Facebook: /LoveFrosting-Cupcakes
Instagram: @loveandfrosting_cupcakes
Why we love them
A relatively new cupcake business, Love and Frosting Cupcakes is owned by local Mum Jesse Settin. She sells the most divine cupcakes, cookies and gift boxes (we’ve tried them and we’re obsessed!) They also do awesome gift packs for Easter, Halloween, Christmas, birthdays and anything you could possibly think of!
We love that Jesse can make literally anything into a cupcake or cookie. She also does super fun cupcake decorating and cookie painting sets for the kids. The NRL cookies are our firm favourite- Raiders obviously!
6. Q! News
Haha cheeky plug for ourselves lol. We’re a lifestyle and entertainment website dedicated to showing off just how ripper (and hilarious) the Queanbeyan region truly is.
We have a wicked sense of humour though, be warned! If you’ve got a hot tip for a news story (think Queanbeyan meets pop culture) then send a note through to editor@qnews.io
