We asked Artificial Intelligence “Who is Queanbeyan’s most notable resident?”
Ask any Boomer and they’ll tell you that computers are taking over the world, and they’re kind of not wrong.
Recent developments in AI (artificial intelligence) graphics and text capabilities have been huge and the threat to human artists and writers is more real than ever. We decided to ask AI website ChatGPT some questions about Queanbeyan, to test its knowledge and accuracy, and see if it could really do our job.
ChatGPT is an AI website that generates natural language responses based on the user’s questions. Basically it’s like a new age “Ask Jeeves” but if like Jeeves went to your local High School and Chat GPT went to Harvard. It has been trained on a massive amount of data from the internet, including books, articles, and websites. The company also creates custom AI pictures on its site DALL.E.
So let’s get down to the fun stuff, what did we ask?”
Question 1: “Tell us about the rivalry between Queanbeyan and Canberra”
ChatGPT Answer: “Queanbeyan and Canberra are two neighbouring towns located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and New South Wales, respectively. While they are separated by only a few kilometers, the towns have a long-standing rivalry that is often fueled by competition and friendly banter.
“The rivalry between Queanbeyan and Canberra dates back to the early days of the ACT’s establishment. Canberra was chosen as the location for the capital city due to its central location, while Queanbeyan was left on the NSW side of the border.
“Over the years, Queanbeyan has developed its own identity as a proud and independent town with a unique history and culture. On the other hand, Canberra is known for its modern architecture, bustling city center, and government institutions.
“The rivalry between the two towns is most evident in sports, particularly in rugby league and Australian rules football. Queanbeyan has a strong tradition in rugby league, with the Queanbeyan Blues being one of the most successful teams in the region. Meanwhile, Canberra is home to the Canberra Raiders, a professional rugby league team that has a large following in the region.
“In Australian rules football, the Queanbeyan Tigers and the Eastlake Demons are long standing rivals, with their matches drawing large crowds and intense competition. Canberra is home to the GWS Giants, a professional Australian rules football team that also has a dedicated following in the region.
“Despite the friendly rivalry between the two towns, they also share a close relationship. Many people who live in Queanbeyan work in Canberra, and the two towns often collaborate on events and projects. Additionally, many visitors to Canberra choose to stay in Queanbeyan due to its proximity and more affordable accommodation options.
“In the end, the rivalry between Queanbeyan and Canberra is more about friendly competition than actual animosity. Both towns have their own unique qualities and contributions to the region, and together they form a vibrant and dynamic community”.

Overall, ChatGPT is pretty accurate in its basic knowledge about Queanbeyan, but it fails to have the human connection, humour and memories of a real person.
