Sorry Queanbeyan, but one of Australia’s best mullets belongs to … Belconnen
“If you’ve got straight hair, don’t bother.”
This is 17-year-old Belconnen boy Seth Redman’s advice for men thinking about growing a mullet.
“And you have to maintain it, or it’s not worth having.”
Seth’s mullet is one of Australia’s most awarded hairstyles. It’s taken out the 14-17 age category at the past two Summernats and in 2024 was named the popular car show’s Most Majestic Mullet. In December, it took out the national 14-17 year title at Mulletfest in Newcastle.
“But I’m not in it for the prizes, which are a bit ordinary to be honest,” Seth says.
“I’m in it for the glory.”
The dominant features of Seth’s mullet are its length and its curls. The apprentice carpenter admits his champion hairstyle – which is somehow party at the front and the back – gets lots of attention, but unfortunately it’s attention of the wrong kind.
“It definitely gets more attention from men than women,” he laughs.
“I’m hoping 2025 is the year that the curls get the girls.”
His haircare routine includes lots of brushing and daily conditioning, Seth says, and his mum Emma is a big fan of the hairstyle that’s been five years in the making. Seth’s mullet is cut and styled by Yusef from Barber Station in Belconnen Mall (he only gets the top and sides cut, never the back).
Seth admits there are times he thinks about shaving his head, especially in summer when the weight of the majestic mullet means he’s sweating a lot. Especially when he’s out on site working.
“I think if I shaved my head it’d be refreshing, like a lot of the weight would be removed,” he says.
“I’d probably be a bit cold!”
