The Queanbeyan hairdresser who started practising on her sleeping dad

Long before she picked up a pair of professional scissors, Cheyanne Burt was already practising her craft.

As a toddler, she’d wait for her dad to fall asleep in his lounge chair before carefully clipping hair accessories throughout his hair.

“I wanted him to look beautiful … and he did,” Cheyanne laughs.

It might sound like an unusual beginning but for Cheyanne – a senior stylist with Hare and Fawn on Queanbeyan’s main street – hairdressing has always felt less like a career choice and more like a calling.

At just 15, she began a school-based apprenticeship at Classique Hair Designs in Queanbeyan, gaining hands-on experience while most teenagers were still deciding what they wanted to do when they finished school.

“Looking back, it feels like hairdressing has always been part of who I am,” Cheyanne says.

“Starting so young gave me the opportunity to build a strong foundation, gain real salon experience and discover my passion for helping people feel confident through their hair.”

Today, Cheyanne has built a reputation for something many hairdressers spend years trying to master: transformations.

From vivid fashion colours and dramatic colour corrections to extensions and helping clients finally embrace their natural curls, she’s famous for creating hair that feels deeply personal.

“I’m known for my expertise in creative colours, curly cuts, curly hair education, and complete transformations using colour and extensions,” she said.

“I love helping clients express their individuality through their hair.”

Part of the Hare and Fawn team since 2024, Cheyanne says the salon’s culture has helped her continue refining her craft.

“The support and education here at Hare and Fawn is unlike anything I’ve experienced elsewhere,” she says.

“There’s a genuine culture of collaboration, with the team constantly brainstorming, sharing ideas and supporting one another.”

When I ask what Cheyanne loves most about her job it takes her a little minute to think, but then she arrives at: “The people”.

“The relationships I’ve built with my clients are one of the things I treasure most about my career,” she says.

“Many of them feel more like friends than clients.”

If you’ve been considering a change, Cheyanne has a simple message.

“If you’ve been thinking about a change, I’d love to help bring your vision to life,” she says.

“Whether you’re looking for a bold creative colour, a fresh cut, beautiful extensions, or a complete transformation, come and see me at Hare and Fawn.”
